Element

You make me breathless
You get me high
When you take me under, I can’t get out from your embrace
I can’t see any clearer than when you’re nearer

Sometimes I wish that I could shine like the sun & bathe you in light
I would make it rain, so that I could drench you in my affections
I want to be everything

You give me a rush
I swear I can feel you all over my body
I still haven’t had enough
And I could really use another shot of you
The things I say come naturally when it comes to you

Sometimes I wish that I could breeze right by you & blow away your fears
I would fill your lungs, so that you could breathe for me
I want to be everything

There’s a bit of you in everything I do
And you know that you move me with every move you make & everything you say
Would it be too much if I wanted to be everything to you?
To you, love is not something you do, it’s something you are
So let me be that element that makes your heart beat
Because your name already fills the seconds between each heartbeat of mine

Sometimes I wish
That I could be everything
Everything that makes you smile when you close your eyes at night
And everything that you live for in the morning
But I’ll settle for being your one & only
Just let me love you

Game of Hearts

Game of Hearts

Game of Hearts

Crushes can break you & love can make you
Dates come & go, but partners never leave you stranded
It’s that ride or die tide coming in everytime I sign up to ship out with you

Think about it for a second
You don’t gamble with certainty, you take risks with the unknown
Faith ain’t blind when you’re listening to your heart & mine
Love isn’t a crutch, it isn’t something you hold onto
Unless my black heart breaks your big heart & my views make your tears swell
You don’t have to worry about a thing
Once the words “I will change” become a regular part of every conversation
That’s your cue to move on & make reservations

We don’t always do what’s best for us because we’re afraid of being “selfish”
But it’s not selfish if you’re doing what’s right
Making moves on strangers while ignoring the heartbeat of your back home love is unforgivable
So if you can go a day or more without thinking of another, maybe it’s time to cut the cord & call it over
Love doesn’t dance with desperation just to feel a spark
Don’t play games with hearts
Every round cuts deep like diamonds

Crushes can break you & love can make you
Dates come & go, but partners never leave you stranded
It’s that ride or die tide coming in everytime I sign up to ship out with you

Player one, game over
You can’t win with a hand full of hearts
You just lose when you try to suit yourself
Every game in town is sleeping around, popping cherries two at a time like pills
One night isn’t worth the fight
Real love doesn’t play for keeps because it isn’t playing at all
Everywhere I go, I’ll have you by my side
So take my hand & we can figure this love game out
Let’s be real & see how that feels
It’s that ride or die tide coming in everytime I sign up to ship out with you

The Ring

Really?

Really?

The other day I saw this little Diddy as someone’s profile picture.

Now I get where it’s coming from. From the standpoint of a committed relationship, sure you should wait until you “put a ring on it” to enjoy sex with your life partner. Now this picture could be making a declaration about fluid-bonded partners feeling safer once they’re married, but I’ll simply assume that it’s focusing on the assurance that comes with knowing that you’re married to the person you’re bringing (protected) satisfaction to.

If you like it be sure to put a ring on it.

If you like it be sure to put a ring on it.

I messaged this newly married person & said to her, “Funny, I was gonna say the safest thing to wear is a condom, but a wedding ring works too.”

She laughed.

Whether you’re married or not, make sure that you’re playing safe & wrap it up. Make sure you get checked out together at a clinic.

Rings show the world that you love each other, protection shows each other that you care about one another.

So many choices, this could be fun!

So many choices, this could be fun!

I’m not against going in raw or unprotected, just be prepared and don’t fool yourself into thinking that a ring will solve everything.

Have fun & be safe kids. Now go make me some God Children… Or not.

Below The Line

Sometimes when I feel lonely
I start wasting time living below the line
And that’s fine until I need somebody to be there in the morning
Who knows what may come
But I know that I’m not done
Trying to get a glimpse of you
But I don’t know where to find you these days
So I hold onto anyone who treats me like you would
When you’re so close, the distance shouldn’t bother me

Don’t you know anybody with half a heart
And half a mind to stay by my side
Tonight & every night

What do I do when she looks like you
And feels just like you
Should I take what I can get?
Living below the waistline
It’s not the best, but it gives me rest
So I guess the big question is
Will I settle for the rest or wait for you to do what’s best?
Forget the distance, when I just want to be with you

Don’t you know anybody with half a heart (You’ve got the other half)
And half a mind to stay by my side (You’re still on my mind)
Tonight & every night

Quotes: Write Drunk; Edit Sober (Remix)

“Write drunk; edit sober.” -Earnest Hemingway

“Write drunk — drunken with emotion. Whether in love or pain; hatred or joy, write intoxicated and completely wasted in the moment.

Edit sober — when all the winds have calmed, and when your eyes are cleared from the poison of life. Clean it up and make your pain presentable.” -Brittany Rose (elaborating on Hemingway)

This quote describes how I approach writing poetry.
