Irony, Can I Have Your Attention Please?

It’s ironic: the more reliable you are, and the less you complain, the more likely you are to be taken for granted. If you always drop what you’re doing to lend a hand, if you never lose your temper, if you’re always prepared, people overlook your efforts. Really, that’s a compliment. Take a minute to think about it. We might not notice and we might not care. No one really pays attention to things until they aren’t functioning the way that they “should” be; as long as everything is running, there is no need to look any deeper. Being taken for granted is positive, as long as you are appreciated and not taken advantage of.

Sometimes it is wise to let people take you for granted. Sometimes it is what you want or even what you need in order to reassess things like your priorities. I realize that I allow it to happen, I should only help when I am truly happy and ready to do so. If there is any resentment or contempt about it, I must say no. Most of it is coming to realize my own boundaries and sticking to them. No one plans to feel this way and that is something worth remembering. If you know what it takes to move on and what it takes to make yourself happy find it, hold on to it and look at it every once in a while.

Don’t let your values be weighed by others, find your own balance and your own reasons for doing what you do. Whether you do it for love, duty, or pay, make sure that you enjoy it. Even now, I’m sure that I have been neglecting to say “Thank you” to someone and actually following through and for that I apologize.

“When one loves, one does not calculate.” – St. Therese of Lisieux

Watch Yourself

Watch your thoughts; they become words
Watch your words; they become actions
Watch your actions; they become habits
Watch your habits; they become character
Watch your character; they become your destiny
